Having mated, they don’t really show to much interest in their babies.

For humans it’s the same thing. A father may not bond too much with his kids. For a male to connect to his kid it’s important it happens from new born as then there will be a bond formed. Hence many babies at first resembles their father first.

But for the mother, the female, she has bonded for 9 months. And like in the animal world she will go to great length to protect and care for her kid. And similar to in the animal kingdom the mother have a bond with the child through her entire life.
